Rusted Objects─Sugar Refinery

About works

CHEN Ying-Ting is enchanted by the handmade paper produced from bagasse. Through the complicated process of soaking, cooking, rinsing, and hand-beating to form the paper pulp, then screening, pressing, and drying, the actual paper is finally made. Sugar refining, an arduous task, also requires the steps of growing, harvesting, transporting, extracting, purifying, crystalizing, and centrifugal separation. During a visit to the sugar factory, she found abandoned machinery, which still represents the good old days of the sugar manufacturing industry.

CHEN selects fibers as the media for her creations.Through making handmade paper by using bagasse, which is simply a different form of sugarcane, she tries to sketch and memorialize the old rusty and abandoned components.
